enACT for the future 1
Forty local Canberra citizens flocked to the inaugural enACT for the Future meeting hosted by the As Nature Intended café/supermarket in Acton ACT during the evening of Tuesday 11 November 2008. Participants were served natural organic food and drink by our friendly hosts, Jamie, Quinn and the team. The evening was a fantastic opportunity for individuals to network and connect with other passionate Canberrans interested in taking action on climate change and sustainability.
enACT for the Future is a networking event to regenerate the long-term health and sustainability of Canberra. Its aim is to support existing initiatives and to create ways of taking action in our community.
Participants were invited to suggest ways to accelerate innovation and change in the region, and to explore how to best collaborate in dealing with Canberra's carbon footprint and climate change issues. It presented the possibilities of learning how to take practical steps in turning our ideas for Canberra into tangible actions, and to build a team to plan and enact future networking and knowledge-sharing events.
The themes identified and prioritised for future events were:
- Big-picture system planning
- What is a sustainable economy?
- What's our vision for Canberra? The 'Canberra Plan'
- What factors need to be in place for change to take root
- Festival of Green Ideas
- The best way to unite the different groups in Canberra
- Solar thermal systems
- Ways to influence people in my community.
A key question identified: 'Should we target people already committed to sustainability activities in Canberra and help them network, interact and build capability or provide events open to any and all in the Canberra community?'
The group wished to undertake activities that achieve these aims and increase awareness and engagement in community groups and local initiatives. The plan for enACT2 (the next event) was to strengthen the connections between existing groups and lighten the load.
Feedback during the evening (using the iMEET! collaborative platform) has ensured that future enACT for the Future meetings will be held quarterly, and will encompass topics of interest canvassed by the group, with a nominated list of suggested speakers. A planning team was established to co-ordinate and host the next event to be held in the new year. [ PDF promotional flyer 93KB ]
